That -- and the fact that work is usually work for the benefit of others -- has saved my life many a time. It doesn't necessarily make the miserable feelings go away, especially if one is clinically depressed, but as you say, it takes the focus off those feelings and allows one to see one's connection to the rest of the human race again.
